I have a friend who has made some bad life choices and is now serving a 40-year prison sentence. He has been there for 23 years. He entered prison with an 8th grade education but in prison has completed his doctorate and is now an ordained minister and ministers to his fellow inmates. He has started a ministry called “Birds of Pray”. In a “Birds of Pray” newsletter he had the following.
Spiritual GPS by Rev. Donald R. Cox
I have a very good friend and brother, Ivan, who takes at least one motorcycle trip a year with his wife and friends. They visit some very interesting places and never get lost. He uses a GPS to choose the path they want to take. After a trip he sends me a typed out log telling where they went and what they saw (pictures are included) for each day of the trip. There is a computer generated map with the actual route covered highlighted. He has a plan put together. The GPS on his bike informs him if they miss a turn or turn wrong. The GPS says, “recalculating” then tells them how to get back on the right road. After 23 years in prison this is very intriguing to me. I caught myself wishing we had a spiritual GPS which would help us stay the course with the Lord. As I contemplated this God revealed to me that we do have a spiritual GPS. He revealed this by sending me to Timothy 3:16,
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
This verse describes the Bible as a Spiritual GPS for our journey through life. Doctrine tells us what road to travel; reproof tells us when we get off the path (Ps. 119:105); correction tells us how to get back on course: instruction in righteousness tells us how to stay the course God has set for us. The moment we veer off on our own, the Holy Spirit starts recalculating and urging us to return to the path God has set for us.
